   It 's the old story of forbidden love between warring families, but Shakespeare's classic tragedy Romeo and Juliet becomes more of a comedy in which the young lovers in question are gnomes a different color to patios on opposite sides of a tall wooden fence. Attracted by their respective Wanderlust gardens and an exotic orchid, Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and Juliet (Emily Blunt) meet and fall in love instantly. Their forbidden love flowers with a little help from a plastic pink flamingo lawn mower races named Featherstone (Jim Cummings), and soon be dangerous to life, an epic battle is staged, and the trees and wisteria gnome hats hacked to bits in the process. Shakespeare himself (Patrick Stewart) turns up and declares that while this story has a marked similarity to one of his, not sure that everything will end in the same way. Shakespunian nuggets of wisdom are "a weed by any other name is still a weed," and that demands fairness, "a hat for a hat", and of course the philosophical question "What's in a gnome?" He just needs to be asked. The penchant executive producer of Elton John for over-the-top showman finds a perfect home in a set of elaborate yard gnomes', and its musical score, is an effective mix of classics and original songs, including a new collaboration with Lady Gaga called "Hello, Hello." Other legendary musicians lending their talents to the voice cast including Ozzy Osbourne and Dolly Parton. This film is funny, engaging, and, with the possible exception of a scantily clad gnome in particular, suitable for the whole family.
